Clary Sage Essential Oil is extracted by steam distillation from the flowering tops and leaves of Salvia sclarea. It is indigenous to Southern Europe and cultivated for its oil in France and Russia. The greatest benefit of this oil is its calming influence on the nerves and is particularly useful for feminine ailments and complaints. It is also said to help skin problems such as acne, boils, and ulcers and to ease aching muscles and joints.
It is useful for those suffering from depression, stress and insomnia. It has been used to aid in women's issues such as painful periods, irregular menstruation and during childbirth. During menopause, this oil is believed to reduce hot flashes, night sweats, palpitations, irritability as well as headaches and dizziness. It has been used as an aphrodisiac. It is also good for digestion and the kidneys. Clary Sage oil should be avoided when consuming alcohol, as it may increase intoxication. Use in small amounts as a large dose may give you a headache.
In the Middle Ages, it was known as Oculus Christi, meaning "the eye of Christ." It was a highly esteemed medicine ever since. In Jamaica, it was used by locals to clean and cool ulcers and for inflammation of the eyes. It is an expensive oil and has been important and useful in aromatherapy and natural medicine for a long time.
