Clary Sage Essential Oil is extracted by steam distillation from the flowering tops and leaves of Salvia sclarea. It is indigenous to southern Europe and is cultivated for its oil in France and Russia. The greatest benefit of this oil is its calming influence on the nerves and is particularly useful for female complaints and ailments. It is also said to help with skin problems such as acne, boils, and ulcers and soothes painful muscles and joints.

It is useful for those suffering from depression, stress, and insomnia. It has been used to aid in woman's problems such as painful periods, irregular menstruation, and during childbirth. During menopause, this oil is believed to reduce hot flashes, night sweats, palpitations, irritability, as well as headaches and dizziness. It has been used as an aphrodisiac. It is also good for digestion and kidneys. Clary Sage oil should be avoided when consuming alcohol as it can increase intoxication. Use in small amounts as a large dose may give you a headache.

In the Middle Ages, it was known as Oculus Christi, meaning "the eye of Christ". It was a highly esteemed medicine from then on. In Jamaica, it was used by the local people to clean and cool ulcers and for inflammation of the eyes.
